How is everyone's Monday going? Mine is terrible. I didn't go into work today and I had a very hard day yesterday. The new lil guy which we named Peezy woke up Sunday morning and seemed to be doing fine. We played with him & Rocco and things were normal. He had been scratching at his eye a lot and would always cry when he was left alone... things I assumed were normal because he's a puppy.
Well around 4pm Neil and I noticed that the Peezy kept squinting his eyes shut and would scratch and scream really really loud. The only time he was quiet was when he was sleeping. We knew something wasn't right so we took him to the 24 hour emergency room vet. Turns out after 2 hours of waiting for a diagnosis that our lil cutie was born with 4 inverted eyelids otherwise known as entropion. Most dogs with his condition only have 1 eyelid that's inverted so Peezy's case is VERY VERY severe. So severe that he is in constant pain. Basixally all of his eyelashes and eyelids are sticking to his eye ball and are irritating it really bad.
The doctor said trying to save him would not be the most practical solution and that we'd probably have to return him to the breeder and give him up to doggie heaven. Neil and I were stunned and we were both in tears. How could a dog we got 24 hours ago be so ill?? We were already head over heels for the new dog so it made it very hard to go home. We got an eye ointment and headed home, in shock, in tears and helpless.
I called the FUCKED up breeders that we bought him from and they said that they will take the dog back and give us a refund. Which was alright but I couldn't imagine what they'd do with Peezy. Putting a dog to sleep costs money, and most breeders kill dogs in the worst ways imaginable. I tried to see if we could get our money back while also keeping Peezy but the assholes were totally unreasonable.
As we held him and tried to put ointment on his puffy watery eyes Neil and I came across an idea. What if we save the lil guy? Why does an 8-week 1 pound dog deserve to die for an eye problem. Money is money and we decided that he's worth every penny. At this moment of the night, we were smiling again because we had hope. That's all we needed.
We drove back to the emergency room to see Dr. McKee around midnight. We told her our plan and while skeptical she was happy to see us so motivated. She gave us pain medication to help the dog sleep and manage until we got an appointment's with one of the Bay Area's best vet optomologists, Dr. Burling. I'm happy to say that we have an appt. Tuesday morning so please please please keep Peezy in your thoughts. The only problem that we will face right now is that the surgery can cost anywhere between $2 - $4,000.00. That's extreme especialy since Peezy'so little that the chances of survival after surgery is rare. Like I said Money is Money and Peezy's life is top priority for us right now.
We have gone through a whirlwind of emotions and feel that every dog deserves a chance to live. Thanks for all of your support and thoughts. =)
