Hand Foot and Mouth Disease... YUCK!
Well its been an interesting week over at the Parry house. We had a sunny gorgeous weekend and we took full advantage of it despite some nasty viruses that have entered my baby boy's body. On Friday we learned that our little LJ has Hand Foot and Mouth disease.
What is this nasty ass thing you ask? Well according to online sites, Hand, foot, and mouth disease is caused by a group of viruses called enteroviruses. The most common enterovirus to cause hand, foot, and mouth disease is coxsackie virus A16. The virus is spread from direct person to person contact.

The symptoms that caused us to take Leonidus into the doctor were that he had tiny bumps on his arms and legs.. The bumps were not puss-filled or anything but they were large enough in numbers that they had both me and daddy worried. The way the doctor could tell that it was the HFM disease was that the bumps were also on his palms and the bottom of his feet...oh and they were also in his mouth. LOVELY! That explained why he wasn't eating many solids for a few days and was drooling. We had assumed he was teething but the mouth symptoms of HFM are similar to that of teething.
To make it worst, there's nothing to do to heal the nasty virus. You just have to wait and time would heal it. I tried to see if there were any natural remedies online that could help with it but nada, nunca...zilch!
Anyways, the good news is that LJ wasn't feeling crummy, he just looked it. Our weekend wasn't interrupted beside the fact that we couldn't attend gym class on Saturday or Swim Class on Sunday. I didn't want to put other kids at risk. yes I'm a good mommy and think about other parents and their kids. :)
We thought our rough patch with medical problems were winding down until yesterday when LJ's eye began oozing yellowish-green puss... which this morning looked like CRAP. We are going back to the doctor again this morning to see what's the deal. Let's hope its not anything serious and that there's an eye drop of something they can give us. In the meantime, we're treating it with tea bags. Its an old Persian remedy that really works on eye infections.
Wish us luck today...

UPDATE: Doctor has diagnosed LJ with a mild eye infection. We have drops to help it. HFM virus is on its way toward recovery. hope to see bumps diminish in the next few days. All symptoms seem to have resolution, now onward to good health!
