sleep - or lack thereof
I remember the days where I used to sleep in until 10, or even 11am. I wish I appreciated the fact that no one relied on me nor did I have responsibilities other than myself.
Once you have children, it is a fact of life-type of lesson that you will no longer get to sleep in.
fact 1: It doesn't matter how late you keep your children up, they will wake up early.
fact 2: children sleep an average of 11 hours a night, a parent is lucky if they can sleep 6 hours straight.
fact 3: you will wake up with your kids in bed with you at least 3 times a week (in my case its 5-6 times a week)
fact 4: you will have unrecognizable stains on your bed and it might be due to a leaky diaper... not sure if its the infants or the toddlers but its laundry time
fact 5: kids have the perfect timing (i'm being sarcastic) when it comes to you know what
The worst is when you go out and you have someone watch your kids. You get home late, go to bed late and god help you if you are hungover when you have to wake up in the morning. I don't remember the last time I was drunk because I fear the day I have to wake up and be all sloppy and droopy around my kids. can't do it to them nor to myself.
I put a lot of pressure on myself (and my hubbie) to try and be the most efficient and effective parents. That means waking up, giving the kids a good breakfast, playing with them, giving them lots of love, attention and kisses and making sure they are on a schedule when it comes to food, naps and baths. No where in this daily schedule does a day of sleeping in come into play. In fact, I almost don't remember how it feels to sleep in. I did go on a small vacation last August 2009 for my friend Candice's wedding. I slept in one day there but I had thrown up the night before (can't drink like i used too) and so it wasn't like a well-rested type sleep.
Do I miss sleep? Yes. Would I trade what I have for it? Never. I do look forward to one day when I can sleep in but with 2 boys under 2, it's only a thought right now. My aunt who has a 6 and 9 year old is now able to sleep in. She said she felt the same way I did when the kids were younger. Before she'd call me super early but now, when I call her on a Saturday morning at 8am, no one answers. LOL!! That's ok though, I have plenty of friends with toddlers who I can count on to be up at the crack of dawn with me.
