The search for a GA position continues

I thought I'd capture a long quest on this blog... The quest to find a Football Coaching Graduate Assistant Position for my hubby at the collegiate level. My hubs, as most of you know, played football in college only to have his career end with a pretty major injury. He loves football and his passion and excitement for the sport has spread to me and I'm sure will have the same impact on both our boys.

Upon retiring from actually *playing* the game, Neil went on to become the color commentator for the SJSU spartan radio show for 4 years. He did on the air radio analysis of each game including pre and post game shows. He loved it (so he thought) and started thinking of pursuing it full-time...That was until San Jose State pulled the rug from under him and didn't ask him to come back for a 5th season. Why? Who knows. He was never given a straight answer and basically I think it was the SJSU AD Tom Bowen. You don't want to know my thoughts about him and I don't want to say such nasty things on our blog so I'll take the fifth and you can just assume what I'm gonna say.

As soon as the radio gig was over, the hubby started to coach high school football. I am not kidding when I say this but the second he stepped on the football field with a whistle around his neck, it was ON. He fell in love. I have never seen my hubby as happy as he was last season, his first as a full-time high school football coach. I was thrilled for him. Seeing him so fired up and back doing what he was so passionate about made me incredibly happy.

Since then, he has told me time and time again that he cannot imagine doing anything else. Life sure has a way of working itself out. Since then, he's been on a quest to gain as much experience as possible with a phenomenal coaching staff at Sobrato High School meanwhile looking around for any opportunity to coach at the collegiate level.

Most colleges require that you become a Graduate Assistant before you become a fulltime coach. A GA is basically like an intern. The college will pay for you to get your masters (all college head coaches have to have a MS) and you will in turn go through an intense 2 year training on how to learn the ins and outs of the college-level game. Basically for two years, he will be working non-stop and will have zero time but hopefully it will all payoff after those 2 years.

Now, all he needs is a break. When my hubby got injured, he met a lot of people in the football business so right now tapping into those resources might prove to be valuable. For now, its a waiting game as most teams are still tied up with their current season. I will update our family blog from time to time as we go through the process of him finding a GA spot. For now, the kids and I are preparing ourselves for an intense 2 years. High school football season was crazy and long and EXTREMELY time consuming, I cannot imagine how college will be. Well, yes I can, I've been warned but you know what, I want this for Neil as bad as he does. When you are with someone, you must support them in their passions and I know 100% that he'd do this for me.

For now, we wait and see... Happy Sunday Funday. Ciao from us!
