Preschool and Leonidus
We are finalizing our preschool paperwork and our son Leonidus will be attending school this Fall for his first time. He is attending a school that we were waitlisted on for MONTHS so being accepted is a huge deal here in the parry home. The school is nestled in the city of Davis and has a very unique feel to it. The education is playbased and the school teaches everything in both spanish and english. Their goal is to have the kids completely fluent in both languages. At home, we are teaching our boys farsi so having 3 languages under their belt will only help them in their future.
I am a firm believer that the spanish language is a MUST for kids. I am surprised that all schools, both private and public, don't teach both of them in the lesson plan. Its just mind boggling to me.
Leonidus will be turning 3 soon and will be attending school full time. I had a hard time figuring out the best balance between school, our jobs and giving the best to our kids. In the end, I realized that my son is old and mature enough to attend school full time. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 6:1. That is half of what California requires so I know my son is still getting a solid amount of attention while he's away from his home.
I am glad that I was able to have my kids home during their first 2 years. To me, those are the most critical years and after that, I think socialization and education is best served at a preschool. While others have the luxury of sending their kids only a few hours a week, us dual working parents have to send the kids fulltime. My mother's guilt soon vanished when I started thinking of all the benefits of my son being in school and allowing me more time to focus on my career and providing the BEST opportunities for our family. Being a parent is not easy and its always a constant battle when it comes to juggling priorities and figuring out what is best for the kids and your family. I have learned to research research research then decide based on my gut. Well the intuition of both my husband and myself. We have learned that every family is different and what works for us may not work for others.
Come to think of it, I was SO shocked to learn how many different types of preschools there were: (1) Public school (2) Montessori (3) Playbased (4) Waldorf... those are jut the 4 I researched... Can you believe that this is all just for preschool??
I have learned a TON over the past few months researching schools, figuring out what works best for what age/gender and how best we can utilize school so we as parents can work. I think we found our balance... it may change in a few months but for now, we think we have a good solid plan for the fall. (let's cross our fingers it works!)
